Ghanaian Tech Influencer partnering with brands all around the world to promote inclusive technology in Africa.

Meet dessy_ocean, the Ghanaian Tech Influencer partnering with brands all around the world to promote inclusive technology in Africa.
Born Desmond O. Appiah, Dessy Ocean is a die hard technology enthusiast. His love for technology could be traced back to as far as age 7.

In our recent interview with him , he recalls when his whole love for technology began.

"I can remember the first day I was introduced to a computer. It was way back in my primary school days. I was so fascinated and intrigued. I wondered how it worked and i was also amazed by the amount of things it could do to make life tasks really simplified. Anyone who knew me back then, would tell you how I always used to top the class in ICT. I understood it naturally and that has fueled my passion for it every since. "

He is currently a Web developer as well as a UI/UX designer and an occasional mobile app developer.
Though majoring in IT, he says 99% of his skill based knowledge comes from the internet.

"The internet is a friend, to say the least. I believe in the quote that "whatever you're about to do, someone has either done it before or tried to do it."

Tech Influencer : Dessy Ocean
Google has almost every answer. You can learn a lot from there. I always watch YouTube videos and try them in order to improve my skills. From practical tutorials to just insightful tech videos.

We're in this part of the world where most people don't acquire skills. Yes we blame our educational institutions but that shouldn't be the case. Schools can't teach you everything.

The internet / web exists for a reason. We have people learning how to do makeup from YouTube, how to cook, how to dress , all these are skills.

There are business videos, law videos, engineering videos , every programme you're studying in school, there's a video or some information on the internet"

We also asked about why he's considered a Tech Influencer and this is what he had to say :

"People love technology, everyone is using at least one form of tech. Smartphones being the most used. People don't really know what these devices can really do aside from calls, taking pictures and using social media.

So what I do is, I research about these devices in detail. I then make graphical / video content explaining it to people.

For example, did you know smartphones could be used to code mobile apps / there are features in smartphone devices that reduce your network speed naturally.

So after such a statement, I go further to show people how to counter such things.

I've got many messages from people telling me how helpful my content is.

So Tech Influencer simply meaning I influence people on the use of Technology and also through technology."

In his recent Social Media campaign, he partners with US based technology company;
WITHKOJI , to inform users on how every individual could create a video game without knowing how to programme/code. A simple visit to the companies website would enable users create games within minutes and publish it . They could also make money from these games.

This is a really nice read. And as he said, in this part of the world skills aren't acquired by individuals. I'm a lecturer and the recent outburst on University of Ghana for just producing degree holders really hit home. The blame should never be on lecturers. We can only give as much knowledge as we can with the limited resources we have. Students have to go out of their ways to do research. In my day as a student, the internet never existed. They have it now. Make use of it. It's really heart warming to see a young man like himself acknowledge what is right and obvious. God bless you for that.
